HTC Evo 4G Root – where’s the details?

No surprise here: lots of people are interested in the details of the root process. There’s four reasons why we aren’t releasing anything yet:

  1. We’re still working on making the root ‘sticky’. The current root doesn’t persist beyond a reboot, meaning you need to root it every time you reboot the device.
  2. We want to package up the rooter in an easy-to-install, one-click application so we’re not holding people’s hands through adb shell.
  3. We don’t want to give HTC any details that they could use to fix the hole before the official release.
  4. We want to make sure that when Froyo is released on this device, we can still get root on it.

#1 is the only real technical challenge left, but we’ve almost cracked it. Stay tuned for details.

FWIW, I can’t use my HTC Evo up here in Canada, so I’ll be selling or trading it after we finish everything up. It’s a great phone, but the best parts of it come from being a great network device.

I feel sorry for screamingz now.
However, please do not wait till #4, they are going to take forever to release Froyo on this, regardless of what the rumors say.

    2. is not important at all, I wouldn’t even bother with that guys, maybe after you release it?

    3. They can’t fix it in time.

So if you fix #1, just release it pweaze :D

ok, i’m a bit of a noob, so correct me if i’m wrong. toast over at xda said, “at the moment the “root” we have is only on system and besides pushing and rm’n apk/files its pretty useless. we need a recovery for root to really mean anything. like flashing radios, roms, and spls. im hoping this comes together soon. i havent heard back from the devs on the current root project. but im still workin on nand exploit/gettin a recovery up with a few other people.” …is this the root you have? or have you found the exploit that would allow a complete system flash w/ custom Rom’s etc. …thanks! -adam

  7. Matt,
I was SO thrilled to learn that you had already rooted the EVO and the device isn’t even in our hands yet! Keep up the great work – I am confident that you will overcome those challenges you listed! It will be nice to have the option to root this phone and take it to the next level!

    Hi,

I just stumbled across an XDA-developer thread which claims that they will soon post details of HTC eVO 4G root (within a day’s time). I think you should release your details before them because you were the one who actually should get the credit.

Its my opinion, you can differ of course.

You’re trying to imply that toast and maejrep doesn’t deserve their credit? From what I know online wise, Toast is one of the coolest hackers out there, and would rather give props to anyone else but himself. Please don’t turn this situation to a BD vs Cyanogen/Koush vs Droidforum situation. Both parties are working hard for the benefit of us, so let’s leave it as that.

P.S.- I was testing the EVO for months now, and all I kept thinking about was Rooting and Froyo. It’s going to happen soon!
